Rainy Saturday afternoon

This is what we do when it’s not nice enough outside to ride bikes. It was my first time baking sugar cookies and I was surprised by how dense the dough was (it has virtually no liquids in it at all).  Then we all pitched in and decorated them with icing and sprinkles.

yummmmm

Yum!

i always mess up these cookies… what did you do to make them so perfect?

  4. Caitlin Says:

To be honest, they aren’t that great: the dough was so stiff and hard to roll out that the cookies are really hard, like biting into cement. And the icing is made of ancient powder sugar that tastes a little weird.

I think the reason they look good is the pretty colours. And sprinkles. Sprinkles make anything look perfect!

And I do believe there are still enough for everyone.

Did you chill the dough before you baked? That might help with the cement-yness. I like to leave mine in the fridge overnight before rolling out. Just wrap it in some plastic.

  9. Caitlin Says:

Yes, I chilled it. I used a Martha Stewart recipe, and hers are notoriously failurriffic. I think my mistake was not getting the butter to true room temperature. And maybe I used a little too little. Another recipe I looked at (after the fact) includes a tablespoon or two of milk, which would certainly loosen things up just enough, I bet.

I want to get the recipe for sugar cookies they have at Dufflet’s. I have dreams about their sugar cookies. And cheesecake.

  10. Susan Says:

oh yes, cheesecake. i had some ricotta cheesecake today, it wasn’t that great.

Could you save one for me? They’re awesomely decorated. In fact, I’d happily hang it on my wall. =D

If not, I quite fancy making some myself. Sounds like a plan for this weekend.
